ADULT CONFIRMATION

The Adult Confirmation Program is for adults who were baptized and raised Catholic and have received First Holy Communion, but were not confirmed. Adults baptized in another Christian denomination who are seeking to become Catholic are properly referred to as candidates for full communion and should read information regarding the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA).

Confirmation enriches the baptized with the strength of the holy spirit so that they can be better witness to christ in word and deed (catechism of the catholic church [ccc] 1285).
Anointed by the holy spirit at confirmation, christians strengthen their bond wit hthe church and become better equipped to carry out the church's mission of love and service.

The Adult Confirmation Program is suggested for St. Edward parishioners who:

  • See the Sacrament of Confirmation
  • Are 18 years of age or older and no longer in high school
  • Were baptized Catholic (a copy of the baptism certificate is required)
  • Have received First Holy Communion
  • Are attending Mass and receiving Communion regularly

Start: Before receiving the sacrament of Confirmation candidates should receive the sacrament of Reconciliation and, where applicable, take the necessary steps to have their marriage recognized by the Church. Receiving the sacrament of Confirmation requires the presence of a sponsor.
Sponsor: The sponsor should be a confirmed Catholic who is actively practicing their faith. Sponsors serve as role models and mentors, helping the candidate to respond to God's call and live the Christian life in the faith community and the world. A parent or spouse may not serve as sponsor.
Preparation: The length of preparation and formation is dependent upon the catechietical needs of the individual. A retreat and sacramental preparation session is scheduled one to to weeks prior to the celebration. Attendance at sessions for RCIA candidates is also recommended. An interview with our pastor, Fr. Don Lemay and completion of appropriate forms is necessary.
